Two days to know the natural and cultural wealth of the Quebrada de Humahuaca in Jujuy and Iruya, a small town in Salta.
DAY 1: departing from Salta towards North along National Route 9, we leave behind San Salvador de Jujuy capital city and finally enter this world famous ravine through Cuesta de Barcena. Volcán and Tumbaya are the 2 first towns that emerge before we detour a few kilometers to the West to be dazzled by Purmamarca and its magical backdrop: the Cerro de los Siete Colores. Here we visit its historic church and the artisan market that occupies the central square. The next stop is Tilcara where we will visit the famous Pucará, an archaeological site of pre-Inca origin. Further on -and after crossing Capricorn Tropic- the hills known as La Pollera de la Coya and Las Señoritas stand out. We arrived in Humahuaca city for lunch and immediately took the fantastic road that leads to Iruya, a dream town that seems to be hanging between hills, rivers, clouds and ravines. Although it is in Salta territory, it is only accessed from Jujuy. Walking through its steep stone streets has a special magic, and even more so at night...
DAY 2: in the morning we begin the return; we will now visit the historic center of Humahuaca: the Cathedral, the Cabildo and the Independence Monument, also called El Indio. On the way back to Salta we will make a stop at the Uquía chapel (the oldest in the Quebrada, with notable examples of Cusco art) where the afternoon sun gives beautiful views of the hills located on the eastern mountain range, especially the Paleta del Pintor that gives a framework to Maimará town.
